Kogi Police Vow Crackdown on Crime Networks

The Kogi State Police Command has reiterated its resolve to intensify operations aimed at crushing criminal gangs and blocking the movement of illegal drugs across the state.

Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, gave the assurance on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Lokoja after the arrest of a 52-year-old suspect allegedly found with 339 wraps of substances believed to be cannabis.

According to the police chief, the suspect was apprehended during a stop-and-search exercise conducted in Kabba, located in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

Kankarofi disclosed that the operation took place on May 9 at about 2:00 p.m. as part of intelligence-driven policing efforts and proactive strategies to combat crime.

“Operatives of the Area Command in Kabba intercepted a Honda Pilot Jeep with registration number LSD 456 GE during routine stop-and-search duties.

”The vehicle was driven by Chris Amos, 52, with Bilat Joseph as a passenger.

”A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 339 wraps of substances reasonably suspected to be Indian hemp concealed inside.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects picked up the consignment from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti on the instruction of an individual identified only as “Alhaji,” the CP said.

The police commissioner stated that efforts were ongoing to track down the alleged mastermind, whose identity and location are yet to be established.

He added that the suspects remain in police custody while the recovered exhibits have been secured for further investigation.

Kankarofi further revealed that detectives were expanding investigations to uncover and arrest other members of the suspected criminal syndicate and ensure all those linked to the crime face prosecution.

Describing illicit drug trafficking as a major contributor to violent crimes and insecurity, the CP assured residents that the command would continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, proactive policing, and collaboration with other security agencies.

He also appreciated the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and residents who provided useful information that aided the operation.

The commissioner urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible intelligence with security agencies to help tackle crime across the state.
