50 Universities to Get New Hostels as FG Allocates ₦250bn for Student Housing in 2026

The Federal Government has announced a ₦250 billion investment in 2026 to build and expand student hostels in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The programme aims to ease chronic accommodation shortages by creating thousands of new bed spaces through direct government funding and Public-Private Partnerships, PPPs.

Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said the initiative is designed to improve student welfare and expand access to quality education by tackling overcrowding in hostels.

Under the plan, ₦100 billion will go toward constructing 500-bed hostels in 50 universities nationwide. Each hostel is estimated to cost about ₦2 billion.

A second component will back 24 PPP hostel projects, with each institution expected to gain between 1,200 and 1,500 new bed spaces. The government will contribute ₦1 billion per project, while private partners will provide roughly ₦3 billion each.

Funding will be channeled through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, which will also support the upgrading and expansion of existing hostel facilities.

The FG says the intervention will reduce congestion, improve living conditions, and create a more conducive learning environment for students in universities and other higher institutions.
