The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has clarified the official appellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following repeated errors by some organisations and media outlets in addressing the Nigerian leader.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Yomi Odunuga.
According to the statement, the correction was personally authorised and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who urged media organisations and the public to verify official titles before publication to avoid embarrassing and avoidable mistakes.
Akume stated that the correct and official title of the President is: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The OSGF said the clarification became necessary after an error was noticed in the naming and appellation of the President in a national newspaper publication on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
The office advised media practitioners and institutions to rely on official OSGF communication channels for verification of names, titles, and protocol matters, stressing that proper fact-checking would help prevent similar lapses in future.
