FG Summons South African Envoy Over Attacks on Nigerians

The Federal Government has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Abuja following fresh attacks on foreign nationals, with Nigerians among those affected.

In a statement issued Saturday, May 2, 2026, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, confirmed the envoy has been invited for a high-level meeting on Monday, May 4.

According to the ministry, the move is aimed at conveying Nigeria’s profound concern over recent developments threatening the long-standing diplomatic ties between both countries.

“The engagement will address ongoing demonstrations in South Africa and verified cases of attacks on Nigerian citizens and their businesses,” the statement said.

Abuja also acknowledged rising anger among Nigerians over the incidents but urged calm, assuring that the government is taking steps to safeguard its citizens abroad.
