Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday commissioned a newly constructed nursing quarters and two mega primary schools in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The projects, executed by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, are aimed at addressing housing shortages for healthcare workers and improving access to quality education across the state.
The nursing quarters, situated near the State Specialist Hospital, consist of eight blocks with six flats each. The fully furnished apartments are equipped with air-conditioning systems to provide comfortable accommodation for health personnel.
In the education sector, the First Lady also inaugurated Aliyakeri and Abbaganaram Mega Primary Schools. Each facility features 48 classrooms, ICT centres, modern sports amenities, e-learning systems, and solar-powered electricity to support uninterrupted academic activities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tinubu commended Zulum’s administration for its people-focused policies, noting that the projects would strengthen healthcare delivery and enhance learning outcomes in the state.
She said, “What we have seen so far in Borno is quite encouraging. You have done very well.”
Zulum revealed that his administration has so far completed 104 mega schools, with additional projects ongoing across the 27 local government areas.
The First Lady also launched a N200 million empowerment programme targeting 2,000 vulnerable women across the state. Each beneficiary will receive N100,000 and a sewing machine to support their livelihoods.
Tinubu praised the initiative, describing it as a reflection of the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens.
A breakdown of the programme shows that 400 beneficiaries were selected from Maiduguri, 200 from Jere, 100 from Biu, while the remaining 24 local government areas received 50 beneficiaries each.
In recognition of excellence in the education sector, Tinubu presented brand-new utility vehicles to eight outstanding teachers and education officials, courtesy of the Borno State Government.
In a related gesture, Governor Zulum also awarded a house to a ministry watchman, Baba Modu Fandi, for his dedication to duty, while the First Lady added a cash gift of N2 million to support him.
