Anambra Anti-touting Agency Arrests 3 for Extorting Petty Traders, Okada Riders

Three suspects have been arrested by the Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA), Anambra state for illegal revenue collection and extortion across the state.

SASA spokesperson, Karen James, who disclosed this on Thursday, said the suspects, Michael Uwaoma, Ndubuisi Aniukwu, and Anthony Onyekwelu, were apprehended in separate operations within Onitsha and its environs.

She said the suspects were arrested for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, respectively.

“Michael Uwaoma, from Okija, Anambra State, was arrested at Mgbuka Obosi for collecting ₦200 from women selling food items.

“Ndubuisi Aniukwu, from Nkanu East in Enugu State, was arrested at Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, for collecting ₦300 from motorcycle riders.

Anthony Onyekwelu, Ndubuisi’s boss from Ngokpala in Imo State, ordered him to collect the money and receive ₦20,000 daily.

According to James, preliminary investigations further revealed that Mr. Aniukwu acted under the directive of Mr. Anthony Onyekwelu, who allegedly imposed a daily remittance target.

“Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a competent magistrate’s court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.

“The court granted bail under strict conditions, including a ₦100,000 bail bond, a ₦300,000 fine, and the requirement of a verified Level 10 civil servant as surety.

“The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing,” she hinted.

While reiterating the agency’s zero-tolerance stance against illegal levies and related acts of extortion, the spokesperson stressed SASA’s commitment to restoring order, protecting legitimate businesses, and ensuring a safe and lawful environment for residents and traders.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report any incidents of illegal collection or harassment to the appropriate authorities,” she added.
