World Bank Commends Nigeria’s TVET Push Under IDEAS Project

The World Bank has praised Nigeria’s expanding investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) under the IDEAS Project, describing it as a bold and strategic response to the country’s persistent youth unemployment challenge.

According to the Bank, more than 3,000 IDEAS-supported TVET centres are now operational across Nigeria, delivering competency-based training designed to match current labour market demands.

The initiative focuses on equipping young Nigerians with practical, job-ready skills capable of driving productivity, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.

The commendation followed an inspection visit to Wavecrest College of Hospitality, one of the institutions benefiting from the programme.

During the visit, World Bank representatives described Nigeria’s TVET model as “impactful and transformative,” noting that it demonstrates how targeted skills development can strengthen workforce readiness and stimulate inclusive growth.

Under the IDEAS framework, beneficiaries undergo six months of intensive, industry-focused training aimed at building technical competence and employability. Graduates are also provided with starter packs to support immediate entry into the workforce or self-employment, alongside access to entrepreneurship and business financing opportunities through the Bank of Industry.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to using skills development as a central pillar of national development policy. Officials emphasized that strengthening vocational and technical education remains critical to youth empowerment, job creation, and long-term economic inclusion.

Development analysts say the scale and structure of the IDEAS Project signal a shift toward demand-driven training in Nigeria, where aligning education with industry needs is increasingly seen as essential to tackling unemployment and boosting national productivity.
