The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the timetable for the 2027 general elections, fixing February 20, 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly polls.
Governorship and State House of Assembly elections will follow two weeks later, on March 6, 2027, according to the schedule announced Friday in Abuja.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed that the commission has already issued the statutory notice of election, formally kick-starting the electoral process.
The commission confirmed it finalized the timetable despite delays in the amendment of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly, noting that aspects of the schedule may be adjusted once the legislative process is concluded.
INEC also pointed to reforms initiated under former chairman Mahmood Yakubu, which introduced long-range election planning aimed at reducing uncertainty, strengthening logistics, and improving confidence in the electoral system.
With the dates now set, political parties, candidates, and stakeholders are expected to begin early preparations for what promises to be another defining electoral cycle in Africa’s largest democracy.
