ISWAP Names Abu Khalifa New Commander in Timbuktu Triangle After Julaibib’s Death

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has appointed Abu Khalifa as its new commander in the Timbuktu Triangle following the killing of its former commander, Julaibib, by Nigerian troops.

Security sources disclosed on Monday that the decision was taken after internal consultations within the ISWAP leadership.

Julaibib was reportedly neutralised during a military operation by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in the Kimba axis of Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.

According to intelligence reports, the group moved swiftly to reorganise its command structure after the loss. “Abu Khalifa has been named as the new ISWAP commander in the Timbuktu Triangle to replace Julaibib,” a security source said.

The sources added that ISWAP is yet to officially appoint a second-in-command. However, a senior fighter identified as Tuja is currently being considered as the leading candidate for the deputy commander position.

The development comes amid sustained military offensives by troops of Operation HADIN KAI against ISWAP and Boko Haram strongholds across the southern Borno axis, as efforts continue to degrade insurgent capabilities in the region.
