A family has been thrown into mourning following the death of a woman, Aishatu Umar, who allegedly suffered months of excruciating pain after a pair of scissors was reportedly left inside her body during a surgical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano State.
Aishatu Umar reportedly passed away at about 1:00 a.m. on Monday, after enduring severe abdominal pain for several months following a surgery carried out in September 2025.
The incident was brought to public attention by a commentator, Abubakar Mohammed, who disclosed the matter in a Facebook post, identifying the deceased as his sister-in-law. He said Aishatu is survived by her husband and five children.
According to Mohammed, Aishatu had been living in Kano when she fell ill and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center. Shortly after the operation, she reportedly began experiencing persistent and worsening abdominal pain.
The family alleged that despite several visits back to the hospital, medical staff failed to conduct thorough investigations, repeatedly administering pain relief medications and discharging her.
“She suffered this pain for four months,” Mohammed said.
He disclosed that it was only two days before her death that comprehensive medical tests and scans were eventually conducted, allegedly revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September surgery.
“Just two days ago, tests and scans were finally conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the operation,” Mohammed stated.
Following the discovery, preparations were reportedly underway to perform a corrective surgery to remove the foreign object. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
“Efforts were being made to perform a corrective surgery yesterday, but her time had run out, and she passed away,” he added.
The family has described the incident as a clear case of gross professional negligence, questioning how such a critical surgical instrument could be left inside a patient by trained medical professionals.
“Is this not pure negligence?” Mohammed asked. “Every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient?”
The family further stated that the incident has not only claimed a life but also undermined public confidence in the healthcare system in the state.
They are now calling on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory bodies to urgently investigate the matter and ensure accountability.
“We call on the Kano State Government to investigate and take action. We call on the health regulatory bodies to investigate and take action. We demand justice for Aishatu Umar,” the family said.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center and Kano State health authorities had not issued any official response to the allegations.
