Many Africans and their parents want their Youths well educated, no matter where. Before African parents were sending money to their children abroad, African students had to go during the day to colleges, work nights and weekends to pay for school fees, rooms and food. When scholarships and loans became available, the Central Bank also facilitated remittance for a few students. This has opened the door for abusers and looters to drain African foreign Reserves.
There was a time Africans needed education in foreign countries because of fewer reputable universities in Africa. Most of our Freedom Fighters and Activists obtained their education in foreign countries and returned home to contribute and share their knowledge. If you qualified abroad in those days and did not come back home after graduation, people said you wanted to kill your mother with grief.
Unfortunately, at the expense of the schools and colleges neglected at home; they suffered. It later became a status symbol for rich parents to send their children to schools abroad. Other parents with little or no money followed the trend looking for foreign currencies anyway and anywhere by hook or crook. It led to looting and cornering every allocation by politicians for money laundering abroad. After all, getting into politics is the easiest way to make money.
Attracting foreign students, sometimes to mediocre schools, became big business abroad. African countries are the place to recruit students to developed countries because they believe any school or college abroad is better than schools at home. Though there are better and more reputable universities in Africa. Since the western governments are restricting visas to foreign students, many schools abroad are now laying off professors and eliminating programs.
The difference between humble children trained abroad and the Nepo (nepotism) bragards is the pocket of their parents. The humble students have to work hard to send themselves to schools while the haughty ones sleep and party. We have some of their parents, the moneybags, donating money to foreign colleges in return for honorary degrees. Monkey dey work in Africa, baboons dey chop in Europe and America!
It takes a village to raise a kid in Africa, not in the big cities anymore. Single parenting is more common abroad and those trained in foster homes because their parents are back in Africa. Others have claimed that it is the lack of home training that turns many of the Nepo children into behavioral deviants. We have to be careful here, abnormal behavior does happen in Africa within all social classes. He without sin should cast the first stone.
When these rich kids come home, some do speed racing with expensive cars. These Nepo kids just take over their own undesignated roads for fun. They use luxurious cars to engage in car races for their fun, especially in big cities like the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Port-Harcourt etc. During the Drag Race, some innocent lives and road watchers are lost. Some are just going about their normal hustles for the day while others go to watch rich kids have fun!
Farouk Amed exposed by Dangote has refocused another way that encourages looters to send their children to expensive schools abroad that even the locals in those countries can not afford. Nigerians wonder how their politicians can afford such expensive schools abroad when local secondary schools and colleges are languishing at home. These looters claim they have lucrative businesses or jobs that paid them well abroad. Who is fooling who?
It is a lucky thing that their parents were not the only Africans that ever worked or made good salaries abroad. But to claim salaries in millions to cover up their children’s outrageous school fees is outrageous. Nepo students like Farouk Amed’s children must have lost his heads. They only associate with other Nepo students abroad. Some do not even hide the last name of fathers, only bear their unknown mothers’ names.
People like Farouk Ahmed looted the country dry to miseducate “throwaway” Nepo children overseas getting absolutely nothing in return personally and no good to the country other than bragging rights or foreign accents. These children feel entitled, are uncultured, ungrateful and rude. You cannot blame them. They could have been born as Talakawa in the slums. Ironically, it used to be those born poor; that worked hard yearning to be great. Not anymore, most want an easy way
There are many cases of Nepo kids’ unAfrican behaviors. Their point is that they cannot survive abroad, the country of abode with what they deem inferior African culture. Some are so rude, the children of the country they adopted are better behaved and more respectful of elders. If you see a Black youth refusing to give up a seat where elderly or disabled are boldly displayed on the bus, suspect he is one of those Nigerian students on whom Africa’s resources are wasted.
Unfortunately, after wasting an enormous amount of money on their children, they leave and never return back to their African roots. When they graduate, most of these children are underemployed but their poor salaries are millions in local African currencies. It is the incentive since the comparison has always been with what little they can make at home if they return. Some of them do not have marketable degrees but their foreign accents may sell at home.
The miseducation of children into another culture has become useless or benefits to Africa! The only time most come home are on vacations, burials or may be weddings. The mothers of the children usually join them abroad as omugwo leaving the father alone at home. The same father that spent his life saving, selling properties or risking jail to loot the government blind in order to source money for education. He usually ends up regretting vanities that become a burden
