As the festive rush gathers steam, the Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kwara State chapter, Comrade Abdulrahman Onikijipa, has cautioned residents to put safety above speed and savings while travelling.
Speaking on Thursday in Ilorin, Onikijipa advised travellers to patronise only recognised motor parks, warning that cutting corners in the name of cheap transport could be a journey into danger.
He noted that many commuters are often tempted by roadside drivers because of lower fares, but stressed that such “cheap alternatives” could come at a costly price.
According to him, recognised motor parks offer proper passenger registration and accountability, which serve as safety nets for travellers.
“It is safer to go to the parks where you will be duly registered before embarking on your journey.
“During the yuletide season, there are different people parading themselves as transporters, but have evil agenda.
“I urge the public to be careful and not just board a road side vehicle; the festive season is too busy and there are different kinds of people with different mindsets.
“Prioritise your safety by going to a recognised park for proper documentation,” he urged.
The RTEAN chairman also cautioned drivers to avoid picking up passengers by the roadside and warned against excessive speeding, stressing that reckless driving during the festive period is a gamble with lives.
