I Have Not Joined APC -Bafarawa Refutes Defection Claims

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa has dismissed reports claiming that he has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as false and misleading.

In a press statement obtained by The News Chronicle on Thursday, Bafarawa said he has neither joined the APC nor intends to join any political party.

“Let me state, without equivocation, that I have not joined the APC and have no intention of joining the party whatsoever. I also have no intention of joining any other political party. It should be recalled that I, on 8th of January, 2025, resigned my membership of the PDP.”

He explained that the reports circulating on social media were the handiwork of mischief makers.

Bafarawa recalled that he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on January 8, 2025, stressing that his decision marked a complete withdrawal from partisan politics.

According to him, he chose to focus on youth empowerment initiatives aimed at inspiring, empowering and transforming young people across the country.

He noted that remaining politically unaffiliated was necessary to avoid any conflict of interest in pursuing his new mission of service to humanity.

The former governor clarified that the speculation about his alleged APC membership may have arisen because many of his former supporters have joined the ruling party.

“The point must be made that my supporters, whether young or old, still have the right of freedom of association. My decision to withdraw from partisan politics is strictly mine, not theirs. If I am tired and retired, they are neither tired nor retired.

“They are therefore free to join any political party or association just as a good number of them have now joined the APC. But it is important to note that my supporters did not join the APC for the sake of it. Their action is driven by the good works of the governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, especially in the area of security,” he said

He also revealed that although he was once a founding member of the APC, he left the party at its early stage due to irreconcilable differences, making it impossible for him to be described as a current member.

Bafarawa urged the public to disregard the reports linking him to the APC, insisting that the claims are false, unfounded and malicious.
