M.I. Abaga, DJ Cuppy Reflect on Long Wait to Marriage

Nigerian rapper M.I. Abaga has shared how he married at 41 after years of feeling behind in love, while DJ Cuppy, still single, says she’s praying for the right man.

Rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I. Abaga, opened up during an appearance on the Jay On Air Podcast, revealing the emotional challenges he faced in his late 30s as he watched friends settle into family life earlier than he did.

“I felt a little bad about being unmarried when I was 37,” he said during the interview. “My friends who got married at 25 or 26 now have 14-year-old kids. Jesse has a 21-year-old child, and I don’t have any kids of my own yet, so you miss out on some of that.”

The rapper, now 41, revealed that he met his wife just before turning 40, shortly after leaving a previous relationship.

“Within my timeline, it just so happened that I had left a relationship around age 39 and met my wife around 40. She was there at my 40th birthday. At that point, I was ready, so I asked her to marry me. We got married when I was 41.”

M.I. noted that his journey taught him the importance of personal readiness and that there is no universal timeline for marriage.

“At the end of the day, when you’re not ready, you’re not ready. Everybody’s timeline is different, and this is something that is lost in humanity today.”

He also acknowledged mistakes in his past relationships, attributing them to his own lack of maturity and emotional preparedness.

“I have sadness when I think about how I was in my former relationships. I met a lot of kind women in my life who were supportive. I just wasn’t mature, and I was stubborn.”

Similarly, Florence Otedola, known globally as DJ Cuppy, also spoke publicly about her desire for marriage

On Tuesday, July 30, 2025, she posted a photo of herself in a worship pose on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption:

“When I see wedding photos online and I start reminding God… again.”

The 31-year-old billionaire heiress and disc jockey was previously engaged to British boxer Ryan Taylor in 2022, but the engagement ended in 2023 under private circumstances.

In a separate conversation with her mother and sisters earlier this July, she said:

“Although I’m not in a relationship, I’ve been talking to a few people. May the best man win.”

DJ Cuppy also recently admitted she is currently single, though she is in communication with multiple men and intends to give her heart to the most suitable candidate.

She has used social media in the past to jokingly reflect on her relationship struggles, once listing “Jesus” as her emergency contact and posting a crying selfie on LinkedIn, seeking a finance professional “6-foot tall with brown eyes.”
