Man Storms NYC Skyscraper, Kills Police Officer With Pregnant Wife, 3 Others

On the evening of Monday, July 28, a mass shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

A 27-year-old gunman, identified as Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the building with an assault-style rifle and opened fire.

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. (ET) when Tamura walked into the lobby of the skyscraper, which houses major firms including Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL headquarters.

He shot NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working security, then fired at others in the lobby. Surveillance footage showed Tamura with a rifle in hand, sparing at least one woman in the elevator area.

He then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he killed another victim before shooting himself in the chest.

Four people were killed, including Officer Islam, a 36-year old Bangladeshi immigrant whose wife is currently pregnant with their third child.

One person, an NFL employee, was critically injured but is in stable condition.
The other three victims have not yet been named publicly.

The chaos sent workers and pedestrians into hiding or fleeing the area, with reports of people barricading themselves inside offices.

Shane Tamura, a Nevada resident and registered gun owner, drove across the country from Las Vegas to New York before the attack.

Police say he was known to have mental health issues, and his motive remains unclear. He previously attended Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles and was once a high school football player.

The LAPD is investigating whether Tamura had any connections to their department following public speculation.

Tamura who died by suicide after shooting himself in the chest on the 33rd floor, had his vehicle, double-parked outside the building. It contained multiple magazines and a revolver and was registered to him.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Tamura acted alone and described the scene as one of “spraying gunfire.” She called Officer Islam, a hero who “made the ultimate sacrifice.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the NFL employee injury and praised Officer Islam and the police for their swift action.

Law enforcement cleared the 44-story building floor-by-floor over several hours and police have lifted shelter-in-place orders.

The LAPD continues to follow up on any leads related to Tamura’s background.

As of now, there are five confirmed dead, including the shooter, and one person recovering in hospital. Investigations continue both in New York and California.
