Spyro Opens Up About Challenges of Proclaiming Christ in the Music Industry

Afrobeats singer Spyro has revealed that openly declaring his faith in Jesus Christ has come with significant challenges in Nigeria’s music industry.

In a recent conversation with Echo Room, Spyro shared a story narrated to him by R&B star-turned-pastor Banky W. According to Spyro, Banky W admitted that his troubles in the music industry began the moment he publicly proclaimed Christ.

Spyro explained how his “Jesus boy” identity has attracted criticism and made it difficult to gain support.

“My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination,” he said. “I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand, and I’ve received a lot of criticism for it.”

He questioned the lack of backing from industry insiders:
“If you want to be truthful, how many media moguls support or post me when I release songs? You see them promoting other artists, but apart from the blogs I pay to post my work, how many truly support me?”

Spyro expressed his frustration, pointing out that even less successful artists receive more recognition. He concluded that the root of the problem lies in his public declaration of faith.

“The moment you come out and declare Christ, it’s like entering a war,” he said. “The whole system feels designed to pull you down.”

Spyro also recalled the advice Banky W gave him:

“Banky W told me his struggles began the moment he proclaimed Christ. He warned me to be sure I was ready for this journey. He said when he was a ‘bad boy,’ everything was fine. But as soon as he decided to take a godly path, the challenges started.”
