National Sports Commission’s DG Vows To Enhance Growth of Sports in LagosĀ

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, has described the maiden edition of the Capital City Race as one of many mini-marathons aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among residents.Ā Ā 

Speaking after participating in the race, Fatodu highlighted the positive impacts of the race on the well-being of participants and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the state. He emphasised that the event provides a platform for local runners to compete among themselves while ensuring that no one is left behind.

Fatodu affirmed that the initiative would cater to every community in Lagos, aligning with the inclusivity mantra championed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. He added that it will meaningfully contribute to improving public health while fostering healthy competition among long-distance runners.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, commended the Lagos State Government and the LSSC for creating an enabling environment for long-distance runners to showcase their talents without any obstacles.

Olopade pledged more support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), adding that there would be a sustainable and symbiotic relationship to further enhance the growth of sports in Lagos State.

The Convener, Dapo Ajayi, expressed gratitude for the impressive turnout of runners and thanked the state government for its unwavering support and commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

In the male category, Gang James Boyi crossed the ribbon with a time of 30:95, followed by Sadjo Ismael at 32:00 and Emmanuel Dung Iliya at 32:15. Meanwhile, in the female category, Abiye David finished with 37:27; Yimulnen Nicholas 37:47 and Goar Grace 39:02.

Abiye David, a three-time winner of the “Lagos Women Run,” achieved another remarkable feat. She expressed her determination to win more races and emphasised her commitment to maintaining a rigorous training routine for long-distance competitions.

Gang James, champion of the maiden edition of Ikeja Race in the male category, described the victory as a significant milestone. He attributed his success to the intensity of his training and vowed to improve his current results in future races.

Present at the event were some Directors from LSSC including Oshodi-Eko Titilayo, Public Affairs; Nunayon Travih, Sports Development; Dr. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, School Sports; Uthman Ola Okunnu, Technical; Deji Aladegbemi, Sports Facilities and Senior Special Assistant on Sports, Damilare Orimoloye.
