Kogi State Governor Approves N600 Million for 2024/2025 WAEC Fees of Public School Students

Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has approved N600 million for the payment of 2024/2025 WAEC examination fees for 18,734 students in public secondary schools across the state.
The announcement was made by Kogi State’s Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, during a press briefing on Tuesday.
He explained that this decision aligns with a state law providing free examination fees for pupils in public schools, which requires the government to cover the costs of both internal and external exams for students in public primary and secondary schools.
Hon. Jones praised Governor Ododo for continuing the legacy established by his predecessor, former Governor Yahaya Bello. “For the 2024/2025 WAEC, we requested the Governor’s approval to pay the fees for 18,734 students, and he approved it,” he stated.
This support reflects a significant increase from 2024, when the government paid fees for 15,033 students.
The additional 3,700 students highlight the growing enrollment in public schools, as more parents choose this option for their children.
The Commissioner explained that the state’s commitment to covering examination fees is aimed at supporting families, reducing out-of-school children, and ensuring students complete their education.
He thanked school principals for their cooperation in managing the process last year but warned of strict penalties for anyone who might attempt dishonest practices.
Additionally, Hon. Jones confirmed that the state government is preparing to cover the JAMB and NABTEB fees for students in public schools.
He assured that fees for the First School Leaving Certificate and Basic Education School Certificate exams would also be paid.
