If I Wanted a Third Term, I Would have Gotten It -Obasanjo Claims

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently stated that, if he had wanted a third term, he could have achieved it.

Speaking on News Central TV, on Friday, Obasanjo shared that during his time in office, some governors supported the idea of extending his presidency beyond the two-term limit, hoping this would allow them to secure third terms as governors.

Obasanjo contrasted the supposed ease of obtaining a third term with the difficulty he faced in securing debt relief for Nigeria.

Achieving debt relief required him to engage in extensive international negotiations, meeting with leaders in France, the UK, the United States, Japan, Italy, and Germany.

“If I wanted a third term, I would have gotten it,” he said. “I know some governors who supported it, thinking that if I got a third term, they would, too. But I didn’t want it. Getting debt relief was far more challenging. That required me to travel to countries like France, England, America, Japan, Italy, and Germany to plead for Nigeria’s case.”
