WhatsApp Unveils New Features to Tackle Misinformation

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is introducing a series of updates aimed at improving user interaction and security as it navigates the challenges of misinformation.

Scheduled for release in October 2024, these features will be available for both Android and iOS users.

One notable addition is the “Search on web” tool, which will allow users to verify the authenticity of images shared within chats.

Users can now easily conduct web searches for images, particularly those that have been forwarded multiple times, by accessing this option through the three-dot menu.

This initiative is part of WhatsApp’s strategy to address the ongoing issue of fake news on its platform.

iOS users will benefit from a revamped chat widget that facilitates quicker access to conversations directly from the home screen.

This improved widget, utilizing the latest iOS widget API, will display updates and enable users to interact with their most important chats without launching the app.

In an effort to personalize user experience, WhatsApp is expanding its array of chat themes to include over 20 new color options.

Users can now choose from 22 themes to customize their chat interfaces, applying different wallpapers and themes to individual or group chats for a more personalized touch.

Furthermore, a new call link feature is being introduced, simplifying the process of initiating video or voice calls directly from chat windows. This feature, found in the chat’s attachment menu, allows users to set up group or one-on-one calls more efficiently.

These updates are currently in beta testing and are expected to roll out to all users shortly.
