Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has instructed that civil servants in the state begin receiving the newly approved national minimum wage starting this month.Â
The directive came during a crucial meeting with the state’s minimum wage implementation committee, which was held at the council chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday.
During the meeting, Governor Zulum emphasized the need to comply with the new national wage standards and ensure that civil servants in Borno State are not left out of the nationwide wage adjustment.
This decision is expected to bring relief to public sector workers, who have long awaited the implementation of the new minimum wage.
In addition to addressing the minimum wage, the governor made another significant announcement regarding the welfare of civil servants and their families.
Governor Zulum approved the immediate release of N3 billion to cover the entitlements of families of civil servants who have passed away while in service.
The financial assistance is intended to help ease the burden on the families of the deceased, ensuring they receive what is owed to them promptly.
As a symbolic gesture, the governor handed over a cheque to representatives of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners during the meeting.
This action reflects the government’s commitment to honoring its obligations to the families of those who dedicated their lives to public service.
Moreover, Governor Zulum reassured those present that his administration is working diligently to clear the backlog of gratuities owed to retirees in the state.
He expressed his intention to ensure that these outstanding payments are fully addressed, while also hinting at plans to review the monthly pension payments upward.
This proposed adjustment would aim to improve the living conditions of pensioners, many of whom have been struggling with low monthly payouts.
