As of September 13, 2024, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has reopened its verification portal, allowing nurses and midwives to submit verification requests online.
This development comes after the portal’s deactivation in February 2024, which had caused significant challenges for Nigerian nurses and midwives working abroad, including legal and employment difficulties.
The reopened portal will now process renewal applications based on the date of application, addressing previous concerns about expiration dates.
The initial closure and revised guidelines, which required a minimum of two years of post-qualification experience and additional documentation, sparked widespread protests and legal actions from affected nurses.
The House of Representatives intervened, urging the NMCN to reconsider the revised guidelines.
In response to the reopening, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has reiterated calls for urgent government intervention on various issues, including salary payments and other pressing concerns for the nursing community.
