Nigerian Oil Grades Retain Premium Status, Casting Light on the Economy

Nigeria’s Brass River, Bonny Light, and Qua Iboe have risen significantly above the current Brent contract due to supply concerns about Libya and a smaller-than-expected drop in US crude oil inventories, which has reduced demand expectations.

While Brent Crude, the main oil benchmark, was trading at approximately $78 per barrel at the time of writing, Brass River and Qua Iboe were trading at about $81.60 a barrel late on Tuesday.

Following news that U.S. oil inventories fell by 846,000 barrels to 425.2 million last week, Brent oil fell more than 1% on Wednesday.

Positive Indications for Nigeria’s Oil Production

Recent improvements in the country’s precarious oil sector’s fundamentals have boosted Nigeria’s economy. With higher crude production countering the negative effects of the naira’s devaluation on the growth of the non-oil industry, the local economy grew faster in the second quarter.

Nigeria’s gross domestic product increased by 3.19 percent annually in the three months ended in June, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, up from 2.98 percent in the previous quarter.

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu has implemented a number of economic reforms aimed at luring in foreign capital, which have raised Nigeria’s output.

The federal government is aiming for an economic growth rate of 3% this year, up from 2% last year, and a return to 6% in the coming years, a rate last obtained in 2014, according to Finance Minister Wale Edun.

According to NBS data, the nation produced 1.41 million barrels of oil per day in the second quarter of this year, up from 1.22 million barrels per day in the previous year.

During the recently concluded Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (NOG) in Abuja, the NNPC declared a state of emergency in the industry due to Nigeria’s ongoing failure to achieve its OPEC production criteria.

Nigeria, the biggest oil producer in Africa, is expected to produce two million barrels of oil per day by the end of this year, according to Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, executive vice president of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Yesterday, the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) oil and gas marketers backed the Bola Tinubu-led government’s directive to the Nigerian state oil corporation to sell crude oil to refineries in Nigeria in Nigerian currency. Mr. Benneth Korie, the Group President, spoke in favor of the federal government halting the smuggling of petroleum products into Nigeria.

Korie maintained that the government must act to counter the threat, even if it meant replacing the customs officers in control of the borders, and argued that there was not enough evidence to support raising the local price of goods as a result of smuggling.

He said that these problems were critical to the success of efforts to guarantee sufficient availability and access to refined petroleum products throughout the nation.

Korie asserts that resolving the difficulties posed by smuggling, growing the agricultural industry, improving the country’s transportation system, and resolving various tax-related concerns can all help to restore Nigeria’s economy.

Libya’s Political Unrest Maintains Crude Oil Prices

One consultancy firm stated that the disruptions in Libya, where several oilfields have ceased production owing to a conflict for control of Libya’s central bank, had been occurring for several weeks, resulting in disruptions of between 900,000 and 1 million barrels per day (bpd).

In July, the nation in North Africa produced about 1.18 million barrels per day. The length of the supply disruption may have an influence on OPEC+ production projections in October. If supply does not decline as expected, the oil markets may benefit.

The FOMC may begin lowering interest rates next month, according to Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic, because both inflation and unemployment have exceeded expectations. The story has also raised the price of oil.
