Xherdan Shaqiri Announces His Retirement From International Football

—

Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri has announced his retirement from international football just a day after the end of the 2024 UEFA Euros.

The Chicago Fire forward made this revelation on his official X (formerly Twitter) page:

“Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team, and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team,” Shaqiri wrote on Instagram. “Great memories remain, and I say to you all, thank you.”

Shaqiri, 32, who was part of the Switzerland squad that participated in the just-concluded Euros, scored a goal in the tournament before his country was eliminated in the quarter-final round by England. Manuel Akanji’s missed penalty during the shootout denied them the next round.

Being the only Swiss player to appear in seven major tournaments, from the World Cup 2010 to Euro 2024, Shaqiri has scored 32 goals in 125 appearances for the national team.
