The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to transfer the management of the Baturiya Game Reserve, also known as the Hadejia Wetland, to the National Park Service.Â
This decision aims to enhance tourism and improve the well-being of the local community.
The announcement was made in a statement by Hajiya Zainab Rabo Ringim, the Special Assistant on Media Affairs to the governor, and was shared with the press in Kano on Thursday.
The Baturiya Game Reserve is home to many indigenous and migratory bird species and supports a diverse range of wildlife, especially water game birds.
The reserve serves as a sanctuary where wildlife can thrive without the threat of capture, attracting tourists from around the world and generating income for the state and local communities.
Hajiya Ringim stated that the transfer decision was made to boost tourism activities and enhance the community’s well-being.
The governor expressed his administration’s commitment to developing tourist attractions in the state and pledged continued support for the National Park Service’s efforts.
Governor Umar Namadi emphasized the state government’s dedication to initiatives that benefit its citizens and confirmed that they are ready for the formal handover of the Hadejia Wetland to the federal government.
This handover is expected to create economic opportunities and improve livelihoods for local residents.
Assistant Conservator-General Mohd Kabir praised the governor for providing a supportive environment for the project, which began in 2011.
He stressed the urgency of the handover and requested further government support to fully realize the wetland’s potential.
The Hadejia Wetland Game Reserve is anticipated to draw tourists from within and outside Nigeria, contributing to the state’s GDP and reinforcing its status as one of Nigeria’s 20 national parks.
This development represents a significant step in Jigawa State’s efforts to leverage its natural resources for sustainable economic growth and community development.
