Famous Nollywood actress Laide Bakare recently accused the Nigerian police of brutality in a viral Instagram post.Â
Laide explained that the incident occurred on Saturday along the Ikorodu Expressway. She described her experience, saying, “For the first time, I witnessed the brutal treatment Nigerians face in that area. I can’t believe someone would drive away a car with a minor inside. My daughter was terrified by what happened.”
She accused the police of targeting expensive cars and vulnerable people to exploit them, claiming they took her ATM card and withdrew N70,000.
In response, the Lagos State police refuted her allegations. SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, explained on X (formerly Twitter) that Bakare was stopped for violating traffic laws by driving in the BRT lane.
“You were stopped for breaking traffic laws. You chose to make a scene and stayed out of your vehicle when it was being taken to the LAMATA office. The officers didn’t give in to your attempts to delay them. You paid a N70,000 fine into the government coffers, received a receipt, and left with your vehicle. No one laid a finger on you,” he stated.
