Meta Halts AI Launch in EU Over Data Privacy Issues

Meta has decided to stop its plans to use user data from the European Union and the United Kingdom for training its AI systems.
This decision follows strong objections from data protection authorities in these regions.
The Irish Data Protection Commission, leading the opposition, expressed concerns about privacy risks.
Similarly, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office asked Meta to pause its plans, stressing the need for thorough assessments to ensure compliance with data protection laws.
Meta stated that it is disappointed by these requests, especially since it had incorporated regulatory feedback and kept European authorities informed since March.
The company believes this delay will hinder AI development and innovation in Europe.
Despite asserting that its approach complies with European laws, Meta will postpone the launch of Meta AI in Europe due to ongoing regulatory concerns.
Meta emphasized the importance of local data for a high-quality user experience and stated that without it, the AI service would be subpar.
