Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has raised concerns about the high number of Almajiris begging on the streets under the guise of seeking Quranic education.
He described the situation as alarming, confusing, and embarrassing for the Muslim community.
Governor Lawal shared his thoughts during the inauguration of the State Almajiri Integrated Quranic School in Gummi, an event graced by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Sunday May 26, 2024.
Lawal pointed out that many individuals involved in criminal activities today started as Almajiris and eventually became significant problems for society.
To address this issue, his administration established the integrated Quranic school with the aim of reducing street begging in the state. He emphasized that the education provided at the school is entirely free.
“The institution boasts nine hostels and accommodations for teachers. The state government will cover all expenses related to the students’ feeding and welfare.”
Additionally, Governor Lawal highlighted that the school includes a vocational center where students can learn various trades.
He urged parents in the state to enroll their children in the school, reiterating that all services are provided at no cost.
The Sultan of Sokoto praised the initiative and encouraged other state governors in Northern Nigeria to follow Zamfara’s example.
He expressed his eagerness to receive invitations from any governor to inaugurate educational projects, particularly Islamic schools.
