As part of the first phase of the President CNG Initiative (PCNGi) execution, the Federal Government has announced intentions to deploy 530 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to six states by the end of May.
This information was made public on the President’s media center’s official X handle, along with a calendar of events for the national introduction of the Presidential CNG Initiative.
The timetable said that the stakeholder event would take place on various dates in each of the nation’s six geographic zones between May 15 and May 29.
While the Kojo Factory inspection at the Enugu-Onitsha site would take place between May 24 and May 31, the South-South and South-East event will take place in Port-Harcourt on May 18.
According to the statement, “530 buses will be deployed by the end of the month in six pioneering states as the @PCNGInitiative’s full implementation kicks off.”
“Total Energies Support Mother Station for Auto CNG, Uyo inspection tour; launch of South-South Affiliate Conversion and Refuelling Centre at FEMADEC site in Port Harcourt.”
“Press conference announcing the launch of Conversion Incentive Programme, Abuja; Chairman Governors Forum commissions Ilorin Refuelling and Conversion Centre,” it said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu introduced the Presidential CNG Initiative in October 2023 in response to the removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, which caused the price of petrol (PMS) for automobiles to increase by over 200%. The initiative was designed to provide more reasonably priced, secure, and ecologically friendly energy options.
- Prior to the one-year anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration, the President had previously declared the start of the CNG vehicle initiative.
- The initiative’s main focus is on the availability of compressed natural gas (CNG) for public transportation. The Federal Government set aside N100 billion from the N500 billion palliative budget to buy 5,500 CNG vehicles (buses and tricycles), 100 electric buses, and more than 20,000 CNG conversion kits in order to lessen the impact of rising fuel prices on the general population. The establishment of CNG refilling and electric charging stations is also supported by this money.
