Borno Lawmaker Advocates for Mercenaries Amid Nigerian Security Force Failures

A member of the Nigerian House of Representatives has suggested employing foreign mercenaries to address the escalating insecurity in the country.
Ahmed Jaha, representing Borno State, argued that Nigeria’s security forces have been ineffective in combating the challenges.
Jaha, who represents Chibok, Gwoza, Danbuwa made the call on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 while reacting to a motion moved by Obinna Ginger.
Jaha highlighted the success of foreign mercenaries in almost eradicating Boko Haram during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The mercenaries almost wiped out the Boko Haram insurgents during Jonathan’s administration but Buhari sent them out of the country,” he said.
He condemned the decision to expel these mercenaries in 2015, claiming it has contributed to the worsening security situation, which has now spread to other regions of the country.
Jaha emphasized the need for the House to take a clear stance on the deployment of foreign assistance to tackle insecurity.
“Nigerian security forces failed to address insecurity despite the billions of naira spent, the House must present a clear position on the deployment of foreign machinery.”
He referenced the previous use of South African mercenaries during Jonathan’s presidency as an example of successful collaboration.
Jaha’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the inability of Nigerian security forces to curb insurgent activities despite substantial financial investment.
