FCTA mandates N6.32 billion for People-oriented Programmes

—

The chairmen of the local councils have been told by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to use the N6.32 billion statutory allocation for March only for projects that benefit the people of Abuja.

The announcement was given by Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT’s minister of state, during Thursday’s 188th Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting in Abuja.

Mahmoud issued a caution against misusing public money.

“As it is today, the funding allocated to the local councils covers more than just personnel salaries. Therefore, in order to justify the monies allocated to the councils, it is imperative that the chairmen start people-oriented projects,” the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

The N6.32 billion allocation was divided between the six area councils, receiving N3.81 billion, and teachers and pensioners, receiving N2.50 billion.

With N796.99 million, the Abuja Municipal Area Council received the largest share.

Gwagwalada Area Council received N606.67 million, whereas Kuje Area, according to reports, was given N635.90 million.

The Bwari, Abaji, and Kwali Area Councils received N598.41 million, N564.90 million, and N611.18 million, respectively.

According to the minister, the amount allotted is 40% more than the N3.94 billion that was distributed in February.

The ministry in charge of overseeing Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory is called the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Under the direction of an FCT minister, local councils are supposed to implement the FCTA’s plans locally.
