The Federal Government, via the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has taken proactive steps to address the issue of egg glut within Nigeria’s poultry sector.Â
Recognizing the significant wastage of eggs due to a lack of value addition, they’ve convened a Consultative Forum in Abuja.
This forum, under the theme “Promoting Sustainable Egg Processing and Utilization for Food and Nutrition Security in Nigeria,” aims to bring together experts in the field to deliberate on strategies for egg powder production, marketing, and utilization.
Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized the pressing need for value addition in Nigeria’s poultry industry.
He highlighted the staggering figure that less than 5% of the country’s egg powder demand is currently met by local production.
This shortfall results in Nigeria spending approximately one billion dollars annually on egg powder imports.
However, he sees this challenge as an opportunity, stressing the untapped investment potential within the local egg powder processing sector.
The government is committed to supporting advancements in science, technology, and indigenous innovation within the industry, alongside providing incentives to stakeholders across the poultry value chain.
Senator Abdullahi urged participants at the forum to devise actionable recommendations that can serve as a blueprint for addressing not only the issue of egg glut but also the lack of awareness among consumers regarding the benefits and utilization of egg powder.
By harnessing local expertise and innovation, the government aims to not only reduce waste in the poultry sector but also enhance food and nutrition security for Nigeria’s populace.
