“Acting Has always Been a Passion of Mine”- Tiwa Savage Talks About Her New Movie Water and Garri

Tiwa Savage’s latest project, the Prime Video original film “Water and Garri,” is set to hit screens on May 10, 2024. In a recent interview with ABC, she shared her experience working on the film, which she both produced and starred in, under the direction of Meji Alabi.

For me, executive producing was like putting on my boss hat and embracing the role of a boss lady in every aspect of my life,” Tiwa remarked. “It was both fun and challenging, juggling multiple responsibilities while also being in front of the camera. But it proved to me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. It’s motivating me to pursue all the dreams I have.

Speaking about her acting career, Tiwa disclosed that it has always been a goal of hers. “Even before music, I have always been passionate about acting. Entering this position seemed like a complete circle. Since I didn’t want to give up on my musical career, this movie is the ideal combination of my two passions.”

The movie “Water and Garri” is named after Tiwa’s 2021 EP of the same name. She gave her reasoning for the decision, saying, “It’s a personal relationship. Beyond that, though, I find the film meaningful since it is narrated by a woman. I think that more female-driven stories should be told in Nollywood and throughout Africa. They are crucial. Love and female empowerment are two topics that are dear to my heart, and this movie represents them both.”

Tiwa also commented on the Afrobeats movement’s global ascent. “Afrobeats is currently experiencing a boom, which is amazing to watch. Considering that genres like jazz, soul, and R&B started in Africa, it’s almost like a full circle moment. It’s amazing to see Afrobeats acquire popularity and impact across the globe. I’m really thrilled about it because it’s reintroducing African rhythm and soul aspects into mainstream music.”
