Meta Temporarily Suspends Threads in Turkey Amid Data-Sharing Restrictions

—

Meta Platforms, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, announced its decision to temporarily shut down access to Threads in Turkey.
This move comes in response to an interim order from Turkey’s competition watchdog, which prohibits data-sharing between Threads and Instagram.
The Turkish Competition Authority had raised concerns about Meta’s data-sharing practices, specifically regarding the creation of Threads profiles based on Instagram accounts without user confirmation.
Meta plans to appeal the order but will comply in the meantime, suspending Threads from April 29 onwards.
While Meta asserts its compliance with Turkish legal requirements, this development underscores the ongoing scrutiny faced by the tech giant regarding user data handling.
This incident also highlights the global regulatory challenges confronting companies like Meta, even outside the European Union’s jurisdiction.
Threads, initially launched in the U.S. last summer, encountered regulatory hurdles in the EU due to stringent data protection regulations.
Its European rollout in December came with modified functionalities to align with EU laws, emphasizing user privacy and consent.
This decision reflects the complexities of navigating diverse regulatory landscapes for tech companies operating on a global scale.
Meta’s ongoing legal battles and compliance efforts underscore the evolving dynamics of data protection and privacy in the digital age.
