Instagram Faces Backlash Over Default Limit on Political Content

Since March, Instagram and its subsidiary Threads have instituted a default setting that limits political content on their platforms.

However, this move has sparked controversy among hundreds of creators, as reported by GLAAD and Accountable Tech, who penned an open letter urging Instagram to make the limit opt-in rather than default.
Signatories of the letter include prominent figures such as comedian Alok Vaid-Menon, actor Kevin McHale, news account So Informed, activist Carlos Eduardo Espina, and others spanning meme accounts, political organizers, and entertainers.
The creators argue that this default limit hampers their ability to share authoritative and factual content on crucial topics like current events, civic engagement, and electoral participation.
Concerns have been raised over Instagram’s broad definition of political content, leaving room for interpretation and potentially stifling conversations on issues like climate change, gun control, and reproductive rights.
Creators fear that marginalized voices sharing their lived experiences could be disproportionately affected by these restrictions.
Moreover, for political creators, these limitations could impact their livelihoods by impeding their reach to new audiences and potential financial opportunities.
While Instagram’s move might be viewed as an attempt at damage control ahead of the U.S. election season, it risks further isolating users in political echo chambers.
The open letter shows that making political recommendations an opt-in feature threatens political engagement, education, and activism on the platform.
