Ferry Disaster in Mozambique: Over 90 Feared Dead Amid Cholera Panic

A ferry carrying over 130 passengers sank off the north coast of Mozambique, leaving over 90 people feared dead. The catastrophe unfolded amid panic sparked by misinformation about a cholera outbreak, compounding the chaos on board.

The journey was en route from Lunga to Mozambique Island, traversing waters frequented by thousands of boats with scant oversight.

Local authorities in Nampula province have confirmed the devastating toll, with only 12 survivors emerging from the disaster. Among the deceased, many were children, marking the profound loss suffered by families and communities.

investigators later revealed that the vessel succumbed to the weight of water it had taken on, plunging passengers into the sea. Harrowing images captured in the aftermath depict a somber scene, with bodies strewn across a nearby beach.

The incident has reignited concerns about maritime safety and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.

This catastrophe occurred amid the backdrop of a cholera outbreak in Nampula province and neighboring regions since last year. Disinformation about the outbreak sparked panic among passengers, exacerbating the conditions that led to the ferry’s sinking.

In the wake of this tragedy, Mozambican authorities face mounting pressure to uphold safety measures and enhance oversight of maritime transportation.
