NiMet Warns of Upcoming Heat Stress

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a grave warning concerning an imminent heat stress phenomenon that threatens several regions across the country.
In a comprehensive advisory, NiMet highlighted the severity of the situation, particularly in northern states such as Kano, Gombe, Sokoto, and Yobe, among others, where the risk of sunstroke looms large.
Through a visual representation using a color-coded map, NiMet underscored the intensity of the heat stress, urging residents and authorities alike to take preemptive measures to mitigate its adverse effects.
The agency further cautioned individuals in Kaduna, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and neighboring states to brace themselves, as the soaring temperatures could result in muscle cramps, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion.
Moreover, its advisory extended to areas like Ado-Ekiti, Akwa-Ibom, Ondo, and Osun, where inhabitants were urged to exercise extreme caution due to the heightened risk of heat-related ailments.
Emphasizing the temporal nature of the forecast, which is valid for Friday, 5th April, NiMet expressed optimism that sporadic rainfall in some southern regions might offer temporary respite from the scorching temperatures.
Elaborating on the multifaceted nature of heat stress, NiMet outlined various contributing factors, including humidity, sun exposure, wind velocity for ventilation, hydration levels, clothing choices, and physical fitness.
The agency’s statement underscored the importance of proactive measures, such as staying hydrated, seeking shelter in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding leaving children unattended in parked vehicles, and ensuring adequate ventilation and hydration for infants.
Furthermore, NiMet recommended practical steps to mitigate the effects of high temperatures, including wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, minimizing strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (typically between 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM), and seeking refuge indoors whenever possible.
In essence, the agency’s comprehensive advisory serves as a vital tool for individuals, communities, and authorities to navigate the imminent heat stress episode responsibly and safeguard public health and well-being.
