Private Telecom Union Suspends Strike Following Agreement with Subcontractors

The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has called off its planned strike, scheduled to commence today, citing fruitful negotiations with subcontractors as the reason for suspension.
In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, the union disclosed that the strike was halted following productive discussions with subcontractors associated with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.
Previously, PTECSSAN had announced intentions for an indefinite strike starting April 4, 2024, due to unresolved grievances with subcontractors including Reime Group, Allstream Energy Solutions Ltd., Uppercrest Ltd., Tyllium Nigeria Ltd., and Specific Tools and Techniques Ltd.
Key agreements reached during negotiations included the recognition of employees’ rights to union affiliation, provision of health facilities compliant with the National Health Insurance Scheme for employees and their families, among others.
The union reiterated demands for the immediate acknowledgment of workers’ association rights, recognition of PTECSSAN as the official representative for negotiations, and proper remittance of membership dues. Furthermore, it emphasized the need for employment regularization, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and initiation of discussions for a collective bargaining agreement.
Despite prior attempts by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to mediate, the union claimed that the subcontractors had failed to engage constructively, prompting the decision for industrial action, which has now been averted.
