Davido Faces Two Billion Naira Lawsuit as Court Rejects Stay of Proceedings: Legal Battle Continues in Warri Again Breach of Contract Case

—

Davido is still being Sued in Court.

The yearly “Warri Again” event organizers, Brownhill Investment Company Limited, filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Davido. The High Court in Delta State denied Davido’s motion to put the lawsuit on hold. The organizers of the 2023 Warri Again event are suing Davido for allegedly not showing up. They are requesting general damages of 2 billion naira.

The claimant is seeking N150 million for legal and professional fees in addition to the damages, plus an additional N30 million to pay the costs of filing the lawsuit.

Davido’s attorney, Mr. Norrison Quakers, SAN, requested a stay of the proceedings, pointing out that the case was still ongoing before the Court of Appeal, a higher court. The High Court, however, denied this application, stating that it was within its authority to continue until a formal directive from the Court of Appeal said otherwise.

In addition, the court granted a motion that allowed the claimant to respond to the defense in a formal manner and required the Pre-Trial Conference forms to be submitted in accordance with procedural rules within a period of 14 days. A pre-trial meeting for the case is set for March 21, 2024.

In an earlier attempt to contest the court’s jurisdiction, Davido’s legal team claimed that the matter ought to be tried in Effurun. Nevertheless, the court rejected this preliminary objection.

The conflict started when Brownhill Investment Company Limited’s former president of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, made public Davido’s alleged contract violation at the event. In reaction, Davido said on social media that his performance in New Zealand interfered with his ability to attend the Warri Again event. He further claimed that the organizers purposefully exploited his name for advertising even though they knew he had prior commitments.
