JUST IN: Reps Endorse Bill on State Police for Second Reading

The House of Representatives on Tuesday 20 February, passed for second reading a bill to provide for the creation of state police in the country.

 

The bill sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu and 14 others, seeks to alter the relevant Sections of the 1999 Constitution to allow for states to establish their own policing formation.

 

 

As parliamentarians took turns to lend their voices to the debate on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary, Kalu who stood in for the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, charged his colleagues to look beyond political ambitions and think about the safety of Nigerians and the citizens.

 

 

Contributing, Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) who stated that It is the job of the police to maintain law and order added that with a population of over 200m, a 400,000 police strength was inadequate to cater for security needs of the citizens.

He stressed that state Police should be created to address the internal security challenges of Nigeria.
