The Super Eagles hold the record for the most AFCON semi-final appearance

The Super Eagles of Nigeria last night reached a milestone for the most appearances in the African Cup of Nations since its inception in 1957.

History was made following Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over the Stable Antelopes of Angola in the quarter-finals round of the tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Many football enthusiasts had lessened their hope for Nigeria after their stringent encounter against the Equatorial Guinea where they were held to a 1-1 in the second game of group A. They have now risen with a shock performance defiling every odds to reach the last four in the 2023 edition.

The Super Eagles have qualified and participated in the tournament 19 times in which they have reached the semi-final round 16 times, topping Egypt who has done it 15 times.

Nigeria have been champions three times since its inaugural, they won the coveted trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

Should Nigeria get to the final in Côte d’Ivoire, it will be their 7th time participating in the final; having played it in: 1980 where they beat Algeria in the final by 3-0, 1984 and 1988 where they lost to Cameroon in both, 1990 they suffered a slim defeat to Algeria, 1994 they beat Zambia to lift their second, 2000 they were humbled in Lagos by Cameroon in a penalty shoot out and in 2013 they won the most recent one against Burkina Faso.
