Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), a division of IHS Holding Limited, has begun rolling out 10,000 km of fiber optic cable throughout Nigeria, contributing to the National Internet Plan’s goal of 70% internet coverage in Nigeria by 2025.
In a broader sense, IHS Nigeria noted that it is still implementing fiber-to-the-tower (FTTT) to boost transmission capacity, which would aid in enhancing the functionality of fiber access networks and facilitating the adoption of next-generation technologies like 5G services.
In collaboration with its clients, IHS Nigeria is assisting in the installation of fiber infrastructure in central cities and facilitating the provision of digital services to residences, businesses, and governmental organizations by connecting towers.
Through its rural telephony program, IHS Nigeria has expanded mobile network coverage to approximately 580 previously unconnected rural villages in Nigeria, complementing GICL’s fiber optic network. IHS Nigeria aims to support the Federal Government’s digital inclusion goal and meet MNO deployment targets by assisting in the delivery of voice and data services to these communities.
Vice President of GICL Kazeem Oladepo said, “In Nigeria, limited urban and long-haul fiber optic networks remain a barrier to the advancement of current communication services as well as the adoption of new technologies and digital services. Our strategy for deploying fiber optic cable focuses on building networks with shared infrastructure that is open to all users. We also provide ducts and fiber pairs that are both reliable and expandable to allow different operators to use the infrastructure.”
