Police Says Ransom Payment Criminal, Faults Citizens For Wrong Approach

The Nigerian police force has said that it is a criminal offence for citizens to pay ransom to abductors in order to secure the release of their loved ones.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who stated this stated this while reacting on the recent incident of abduction in Ekiti State during an interview on Channels TV on Thursday, February 1, emphasized that the challenge has always been that families of abducted individuals do not carry security operatives along while going to deliver the ransom.

He stated that the kidnappers always work on the psyche of the families of the victims such that they become apprehensive of carrying security operatives along when going to make ransom payment.

The police PPRO stressed on the manipulative ways used by the abductors to scare victims; ‘’don’t tell the security agents! Don’t tell the police! If you do they are going to kill your relation.

“We have to understand the dimensions of kidnapping. Kidnappers will take kidnapping as a business. They will kidnap and negotiate and get money. We got to a stage where they kidnapped, get money and killed the victim”.
