Professor Dili Dogo, the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University in Abuja, collaborated with the Afro Eye Foundation (AEF) to conduct a free eye test and medical outreach for thousands of people with Eye-Related Impairment (ERI) in Southern Borno senatorial district.
Originally targeting 500 patients between December 29th and 31st, 2023, at Marama General Hospital in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno state, the initiative witnessed an overwhelming turnout of over 3,000 individuals who received medications, glasses, or medical advice.
During the festive season, Professor Dogo, a philanthropist and Professor of Surgery, continued his annual tradition of distributing wrappers and cash to numerous widows in the Marama Community.
Speaking to journalists at the closing ceremony of the ERI treatment exercise, Professor Dogo emphasized that the outreach was a part of his personal social responsibility as a medical doctor concerned about the rising cases of sight impairments in the local population.
He clarified that the initiative was not politically motivated but aimed at assisting those in need of eye-related treatment who couldn’t afford to go to hospitals.
Originally planning for 500 beneficiaries, the unexpected turnout prompted Professor Dogo and the AEF to ensure that all 3,000 participants received the intended benefits.
Expressing gratitude for the peaceful conduct of his people, Professor Dogo acknowledged the collaborative efforts of AEF and other stakeholders, highlighting that such initiatives would become routine.
During a vote of thanks on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, the Caretaker Management Committee Chairman, praised Professor Dili Dogo for his noble gesture.
Bwala acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor’s consistent support to the underprivileged in the community and highlighted that the free eye care initiative had garnered public attention and increased Dogo’s popularity among his people.
He also commended the communities in and around Hawul Council Area for mobilizing patients who greatly benefited from the initiative.
Mr. Bwala urged well-to-do individuals to emulate Professor Dogo’s humanitarian assistance, emphasizing the positive impact such efforts could have on communities in need.
