Nigerian Police begin special operation to tackle plateau killings

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has established a Special Intervention Squad to address the ongoing attacks in certain parts of Plateau State.

Earlier, on Christmas Eve, assailants believed to be killer herdsmen targeted more than 25 communities in Bokkos and Barakin-Ladi local government areas of the state, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly 160 lives.

Following a visit to Governor Caleb Muftwang at the Little Ray Field Government House in Jos, Plateau State, the Inspector General of Police spoke to reporters.

He mentioned that the newly formed special squad would promptly commence operations in the state as part of a security intervention to tackle the prevailing insecurity issues.

“I also have a specific instruction from Mr. President to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous act, ensuring that the killings in this state cease. That is our commitment.

We have initiated deployments accordingly. We are responding appropriately to this incident, and we are not ignoring it. We are mobilizing all our resources to prevent a recurrence in Plateau State.”

The Inspector General elaborated on the ongoing efforts, stating, “I informed the people during my visit to the governor’s office that a special operation has commenced in this state today, involving the deployment of tactical units.

You can see me accompanied by the DIG operations, and the DIG Intelligence is also present. ”

The AIG wing and the AIG of the Zone are here as well. The AIG of the Zone has been instructed to relocate to Plateau until we achieve success in the operation starting today.”

He further disclosed that the Special Interventions Squad would kick off in 10 pilot states across Nigeria, including Plateau State.

The objective is to have a police presence in the affected areas, ensuring that criminals face justice and are deterred from launching further attacks.

“I am also here to instill confidence in the people in the affected areas and the people of Plateau State in general. We have bolstered our deployment, issuing directives for tactical units to enter the affected and vulnerable areas,” he affirmed.
