Meta’s new text-based app, Threads, has finally landed in the European Union, expanding its reach across more European countries. The app, spun-off from Instagram, aims to take on X (formerly known as Twitter) following user and advertiser discontent after Elon Musk’s involvement.
Initially launched in 100 nations, Threads held off its EU debut due to concerns about meeting regulatory requirements. Meta faced intense scrutiny over its data practices for targeted ads in the EU.
European authorities have been closely examining major tech companies like Meta, instituting stricter regulations to safeguard user data, foster fair online competition, and manage content dissemination.
European users can now access Threads, linked to their Instagram accounts or without a profile, enabling them to browse, share, and report content. However, interaction and posting on the platform necessitate an Instagram sign-on.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) categorizes Meta as a “gatekeeper” alongside other tech giants, leading to more stringent regulations and interoperability standards.
Meta is exploring ways to enable Threads posts on other platforms while contesting specific designations and scopes outlined in the DMA.
To adhere to EU regulations, Meta plans to offer ad-free subscriptions, expand fact-checking programs on Threads, and address concerns about data privacy.
Under the Digital Services Act, large digital firms must rigorously monitor content to combat misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, facing substantial fines if they fail to comply.
