How To Identify A Fake QR Code

QR codes are everywhere nowadays – on posters, ads, and even on food packaging. They’re handy for quickly accessing information with a simple scan using your phone’s camera. But, there’s a chance you might encounter fake QR codes designed to trick you. Here’s how you can identify them:
1. Check the Design: Real QR codes have a specific pattern of black squares on a white background. If the code looks blurry, has weird colors, or doesn’t seem to have a clear pattern, it might be fake.
2. Look for Strange URLs: Before scanning, take a peek at the web address that appears after scanning. If it seems odd or doesn’t match the expected content (like a code for a product leading to a random website), it could be a fake.
3. Verify the Source: Trustworthy sources usually provide QR codes directly linked to their official websites or platforms. If you find a code on a random sticker or unverified source, be cautious—it might not be legitimate.
4. Scan with Caution: Before scanning, ensure you have a good antivirus app on your phone. Some fake QR codes can lead to malicious websites or download harmful software.
5. Be Wary of Offers that Seem Too Good: If a QR code promises unbelievable offers or prizes for scanning, be skeptical. Scammers often use tempting offers to lure people into scanning their fake codes.
6. Check for Tampering: Inspect the QR code closely. If it looks like it’s been placed on top of another image or sticker, it might be tampered with or fake.
7. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off or suspicious, it’s better to skip scanning the code. Your gut feeling can often alert you to potential dangers.
