Scores Injured As Militants Attack Cross River Community

Reportedly, armed Ambazonian militants in Cameroon have allegedly taken control of the Belegete community in the Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

The Belegete community, situated on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon within the edges of the Obanliku plateau, is facing a critical situation. Notably, the community lacks access roads or communication networks to reach headquarters promptly.

According to reliable sources as disclosed to ‘CrossRiverWatch,’ the armed bandits have held the community captive for more than 24 hours without any security intervention. The distressing incident occurred on December 5, 2023. The armed Ambazonian militants reportedly entered Belegete heavily armed, firing weapons indiscriminately, and physically assaulting residents with cutlasses.

Numerous individuals have sustained injuries, while some managed to escape the attack, including men, women, and children.

Alarmed by the invasion, the community sought assistance from relevant authorities. The state Security adviser contacted the Army Commander to rescue Nigerian citizens.

However, despite the army’s efforts to reach the location, they encountered difficulties due to the absence of access roads.

Consequently, the soldiers returned to their barracks, citing a lack of logistics provided by the Local Government Head of Administration (HOLGA).

In the midst of Belegete being held captive by Ambazonian militants, the community is making a plea to security agencies to reassess the situation and take effective measures to alleviate the distressing conditions.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the ongoing danger faced by the residents in the absence of immediate intervention and logistical support for security forces.

“When we heard the report that Ambazonian militia invaded the community, we reported to the relevant authorities to come for our aid, while the state Security adviser called the Army Commander to go for the rescued of Nigerian citizens, the soldiers went up to the Ranch, but due to lack of access road, all the armies return to their Barracks, reporting that the Local Government Head of Administration (HOLGA) did not provide logistics for them to go.

“While our community has been captured by Ambazonian militia, we are still appealing to the security agencies to recalibrate and mitigate the unbearable situation in our community,” the source said.
