Black Friday: FG Warns Nigerians Against Fake Online Stores

The Nigerian Government through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has advised Nigerians to steer clear of counterfeit online stores in anticipation of the upcoming ‘Black Friday’ sales.
FCCPC CEO Babatunde Irukera, on Thursday expressed the Commission’s anticipation of a significant 135% surge in the proliferation of fake online stores.
They appealed to Nigerians to exercise vigilance and exclusively rely on trusted and reputable platforms for their shopping needs.
Irukera further advised consumers to be cautious, discerning, and assertive in demanding their rights, particularly regarding clear and comprehensive disclosures from vendors.
Earlier, Netcraft, a research group, had raised concerns regarding the proliferation of fraudulent online stores ahead of the official ‘Black Friday’ sales set to commence from November 24th to 27th following Thanksgiving Day celebrations in the United States.
Netcraft highlighted the deceptive techniques employed by these fraudulent platforms, including deceptive discounts and the creation of counterfeit, high-end websites to lure unsuspecting victims.
Despite challenging economic conditions, many Nigerians might still be enticed to participate in ‘Black Friday’ sales, risking exposure to potential fraudulent schemes amid these economic uncertainties.
