Driverless Truck Crushes Woman to Death in Anambra

Police is presently searching for the driver of Mack Truck that crushed a woman to death at Ezeiweka Road axis of the Onitsha—Owerri Road, Onitsha on Thursday.

The Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Adeoye Irelewuyi disclosed this in Awka, when he spoke with TNC correspondent earlier this Friday morning, October 20 on the matter.

According to eye witnesses, the Mack Truck was parked while goods were being offloaded from it; and all of a sudden, it rolled off without any driver inside it.

However, as attempts were being made by people to stop the truck, it speedily knocked down a woman and crushed her to death before it was eventually stopped.

The sympathizers also attributed the incident to brake failure.

It was impossible to identify the truck driver as the incident happened.

Even when operatives of the FRSC arrived the scene, it was difficult to remove the trapped dead victim under the contained attached to the truck.

According to Irelewuyi, the matter is being investigated by the Police and efforts are being made to locate him.

He said going by the details of the incident at a first glance, there were so many mistakes on the part of the driver.

“He didn’t take the necessary precautionary measures to ensure safety of all.

“However, it would be preemptive to judge him now until we hear from him.

“And since it involves death, the Police has taken over the matter and we would know what actually happened by the time they conclude their investigations,” he said.

The Anambra FRSC Sector Commander urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles do not constitute danger to other road users, whether in motion or parked.

“Extra care shoud be taken when we are using the roads to ensure that we do not constitute danger to people using the roads.

“Driver are urged to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and that they take the necessary precautionary measures while moving or when they are parked. That way, we can minimize road traffic crashes,” he said.

Meanwhile, as at this morning, we gathered that the dead woman trapped under the container on the Mark Truck has been removed, after the truck was lifted with the help of a crane.
